Are you interested in buying a home outside of the United States? If so, you need to know that this is much different than what you would be used to dealing with here in our country. But with that being said, there are some similarities that you will notice as well.
As you can imagine, it is important to know as much as you can about foreign real estate markets before you actually decide to buy. Here are some guidelines:
Do your homework. Make sure you research the real estate market there. Is it a buyer's or seller's market? What areas are best for what you are trying to accomplish? What is the going rate for homes in these areas? (Knowing this is crucial to being able to negotiate a good deal.) Are there any special details that you need to be aware of and monitor? Don't leave any stone unturned. You don't want to miss an important piece of information that could have a significant impact on the purchase of your property.
Show me the money. How are you planning to pay for the property? Do you know how much will actually be required? Since you are no longer in the United States, you will not be making your purchase with American dollars. Make sure you check this out thoroughly before you buy so that you are very clear on what the price equivalent is going to be in US dollars.
Consider hiring a real estate agent. If you are struggling to get on track, you may want to consider hiring a real estate agent in the country where you are looking. A good agent will help take a lot of the guesswork out of your research and should be able to give you a clearer picture of their country's real estate market than you might be able to discover on your own.
Buying a home outside the United States is not impossible. But in order to get the best deal, you need to be informed and know what is going on at all times.
